Artisan Jams

We serve award winning jams and preserves hand crafted by my friend Bob Allen on Los Altos Hills, CA.

The Bow Tie Bob and Karen were in town for a 20th reunion for her graduation from Temple Medical School. The dinner on Saturday night was a formal affair. Bob had asked me in the morning if I would be around that evening so I could take their picture before they left for the event.

When I checked in with them at 5:30 PM, I found Bob in a state of panic. "I forgot to bring my bow tie to wear with my tuxedo. Where can I find one at this time on a Saturday evening?"

"Hang on a second," I replied. I went in to the other room where I have a dresser that holds an odd assortment of rarely worn clothes, my collection of Japanese kimono, and some family heirlooms. In one of the drawers I found a small white box that held my father's formal bow ties ... a black one, a white one and a mink one. Lord knows why I've held on to them for the past 18 years, but the black one came in handy that evening.

Change in Taiwan Currency Normally my guests pay for their stays at the inn with a credit card, that is handled by the B and B Connection along with reservations. It's nice for me because I rarely have to talk money with my guests. However, occasionally I do take cash payments. Recently, a guest from the University of Taiwan asked if he could pay me with traveler's cheques.

"No problem," I said, until I realized I needed to find $51 in cash to make change. I only had $31 in my wallet. "Perhaps I have a $20 bill stashed somewhere in the house," I thought, and went to look in my third floor office. I didn't find a $20, but I did find a wallet with a bunch of foreign curency that I had left over from various travels abroad. Among the bills I found some Taiwanese notes, one of them worth about $30. He was quite surpirsed but the problem was solved. We laughed about the "International Bank of Jean!"
